Indian general election for parliament gets underway (ANSA) - Rome, April 7 - Indians began voting on Monday in the first phase of a marathon, five-week parliamentary election pitting the governing Congress Party against the Hindu nationalist opposition, the BJP.

The Hindu nationalists are favoured to win against the Gandhi family’s party, which has governed for the last ten years.

The nine-phase vote began in the northeastern states of Tripura and Assam, near the Bangladesh border, and will end May 12. More than 814 million Indians are eligible to vote, the BBC reported.
