(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 28 - Geert Wilders will attend an event
taking place in Florence on Sunday organised by the Identity and
Democracy (ID) group that Italian Deputy Premier and Transport
Minister Matteo Salvini's League party belongs to in the
European Parliament.
Salvini announced the presence of Wilders, whose right-wing
Party for Freedom (PVV) party came first in the recent elections
in the Netherlands, at a press conference at the foreign press
association in Rome.
He said representatives of 14 different parties allied to the
League will be present at the event.
He said Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Rally party in
France's National Assembly, will take part via video link.
When asked about Wilders saying in 2020 that Italy should not
get "a cent" of EU aid to help it recover from economic impact
of the COVID-19 pandemic, Salvini replied that "others have made
worse statements.
"He defended the Dutch national interest, like (Hungarian Prime
Minister Viktor) Orbán is doing and like I defend the Italian
national interest," he continued.
"On Sunday we'll put the common European interest on the table".
