(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 28 - The European Union needs to move from
unanimous to majority voting in order to avoid paralysis in
decision-making in key areas like foreign and security policy,
President Sergio Mattarella told Czech counterpart Petr Pavel in
Rome Tuesday.
"In foreign and security policy, Europe must speak with one
voice", he said.
"Europe is a bearer of peace, civilisation, promotion of rights,
opening of markets, culture but, in the face of epochal global
challenges, characterised by the presence of large subjects and
large aggregations, it needs to be more cohesive and efficient,
but above all it is necessary to overcome, at least for some
issues, unanimous voting and move to a majority vote of the
members" especially in view of new enlargements of the Union".
Otherwise, Mattarella said, "we risk decision-making paralysis
and irrelevance on the world stage". (ANSA).
