Grillo calls for funds ahead of European vote (ANSA) - Rome, April 8 - Ex-comic turned politician Beppe Grillo, leader of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), rallied grass-roots supporters Tuesday in a quest for campaign funds ahead of European parliamentary elections in May.

"We need money," Grill wrote on his website. "I'm not asking for much. A million euros," he continued, calling on supporters to donate between five euros and 1,000 euros. "I received the latest opinion poll just 30 seconds ago," Grillo added.

"We are at 92%, I need to do something big to lower our approval rating," he quipped. Grillo is currently on a nation-wide campaign tour dubbed 'I'll give you Europe' ahead of the May 25 European parliamentary elections in which eurosceptic parties such as M5S are expected to do well. In Italy the movement is vying for seats with the centre-left Democratic Party (Pd) of Premier Matteo Renzi and ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's revived centre-right Forza Italia.
